’Tis nobler in mind of James
A SELBY teenager recited Shakespeare on the small screen this weekend.
James Osman, 15, from Selby High School, read from Hamlet and Henry V in the final of Off By Heart Shakespeare in Stratford that was broadcast by the BBC on Saturday evening.
The competition saw hundreds of children from schools around the country recite Shakespeare monologues to a panel of judges, before the final nine performed before judges including Simon Schama and actor Samuel West.
Richard Hanson, assistant head teacher at Selby High, said: “James entered the regional competition at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds last November, where he was selected from 200 to go forward to the next stage of the competition.”
For the regional heat, James, who recently appeared in York Shakespeare Project’s Troilus & Cressida, recited the Friends, Romans, Countrymen speech from Julius Caesar, and for the televised final, he performed Henry V’s St Crispin’s Day speech and Hamlet’s To Be, Or Not To Be.
Commenting on taking part in the show, James (above) said: “It was really good fun, especially working with the RSC and Cicely Berry, a voice director who has worked with Al Pacino.
“It was a life-changing experience for me, and I really enjoyed it.”
He has a busy summer ahead of him, as he will take part in the Mystery Plays and workshops with the National Youth Theatre over the summer.
He will be going on to study drama at York College in September.
